Our History
Davis & Wilkerson was founded in October 1985, in Austin, Texas, with a goal of developing a legal practice built on strong relationships with its clients, employees and other attorneys in lieu of seeking short-term profits. The firm’s primary focus has been in the areas of civil trial law, professional liability defense and health care law. Today the firm still adheres to those original goals, values and core practice areas.
As the firm intentionally broadened its practice to provide increased client support, it has grown from 3 attorneys to 27 attorneys. The commitment and level of expertise are shown throughout the firm which prides itself in the fact that one-third of the firm’s attorneys are Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
Being located in the Capitol City has proven valuable for the firm due to its broad client base, many of whom are regulated by the state. Also, as Austin has grown with the high-tech influx, D&W’s practice has also benefitted from the growth that followed the newcomers into the city. Today, about one-fourth of D&W’s practice is in commercial litigation and construction litigation.
Austinites also have benefitted from the firm’s presence in the Capitol City. The firm has regularly contributed funds and expertise to help individuals and families receive cost-fee legal assistance through the Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) of Central Texas. This contribution was recognized in 2006 when the firm received the prestigious Joseph P. Hart Award, which is given each year to a firm that demonstrates the integrity and commitment to provide legal assistance for those without the ability to obtain that assistance on their own. In addition to D&W’s involvement with VLS, the firm contributes to more than two dozen other charitable Austin organizations.
The firm continues to attract adept attorneys and staff with its relationship-based philosophy. Though the group forgoes the customary law firm focus on long work days, it has tried over 300 jury trials in state and federal courts throughout Texas.
When invited to merge with other firms, D&W resists the temptation to become “just another business” and jeopardize what they have created. “Professionally, I’m most proud of helping to create a partnership where we are trusted friends to our co-workers, staff and clients,” says founder David Davis. “It’s a balanced life of health, family and community.”
